BQLT is excited to announce Zachary Schulman’s “The Community Gardener Portrait Project: NYC” photo exhibit that ran from January 24 – March 14, 2024. It featured portraits of 5 BQLT gardeners!
Opening reception was held on Wed. Jan. 24th 6-8pm and the exhibition was on view through March 14, 2024 at The Arsenal (830 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10019).
The Community Gardener Portrait Project: New York City is an exhibition of photographs and accompanying interview excerpts by Zachary Schulman and co-sponsored by NYC Parks’ Art & Antiquities division and GreenThumbNYC. Over the past five years, Schulman has met with 121 community gardeners in NYC. The exhibition featured a selection of 34 portraits taken across all five boroughs and invites viewers to learn more about the creation and long-term stewardship of these green spaces.  This exhibit featured 5 BQLT gardeners: Ada Smothers (McIntosh Neighborhood Assn. Garden); Joan Belton and Michael Foxworth (Merrick Marsden Neighborhood Association Garden & MMNA2); Princess Benn James (Mama Dee’s); and Sean-Michael Fleming (Woodbine Street Block Association Garden).

Zack is a former BQLT staff member and supporter, and we’re excited he has included 5 BQLT gardeners in this 2024 exhibition of portraits! We proudly supported his Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC) grant applications for his Brooklyn gardener portraits and are very excited to see his portraits of all the amazing NYC gardeners! Check out his first series of beautiful portraits of garden leaders, including several from BQLT gardens, at: https://zacharyschulman.com/#/gardenleaders/
