BQLT’s Pollinator Habitat Kit Project with Xerces Society (2023 Season)

Northeast Monarch & Pollinator Habitat Kit Project with the Xerces Society

BQLT was selected as a project partner with the Xerces Society during the 2023 season to distribute free pollinator-friendly plants to our gardens! Frank Schellace (Beekeeper & Gardener at Q-Gardens) worked with the Xerces Society to secure a habitat kit of 500+ plants! As a project partner, BQLT offered to provide the time, labor, and land to create pollinator habitats.

Fourteen BQLT gardens stepped up to receive these pollinator-friendly plants on June 9th at 1100 Block Bergen St. Community Garden in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Gardeners are tracking the progress and taking photos of their new plants (and hopefully with pollinators) during the 2023 season.

On August 5th, at RTV Place Garden in E. Flatbush, Frank Schellace conducted a workshop with his traveling observation 🐝beehive🐝 on pollinators and pollinator-friendly plants, and led a tour around RTV garden to search for all the busy bees and other pollinating insects!

Pollinator-friendly Plants: Common Milkweed, Butterfly Milkweed, Blue Mistflower, Lanceleaf Coreopsis, Purple Coneflower, Dense Blazingstar, Wild Bergamot, Tall White Beardtongue, Narrowleaf Mountainmint, Smooth Blue Aster, and Culver’s Root.

BQLT gardeners could choose from two options to participate:

1) Planter–receive some free pollinator-friendly plants for your garden OR

2) Planter Plus–receive some free plants for your garden AND willing to send photos and updates to track the progress of the new plants.
